Our History of Success

B.D. Stevens Limited is the original founding company of what has grown to become the Stevens Group of Companies today. The Stevens Group is a privately held third generation family business with its head office located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

2014-15

After 61 years in the construction industry, BD Stevens Ltd. is still synonymous with integrity and honesty. Now specializing in Design-Build Tilt-Up Construction, project management services and specialized renovation services, BD Stevens continues its legacy of construction excellence with an enduring presence in the Nova Scotia Construction industry.

2000

The Tilt-Up Construction Association established the Murray Parker Memorial Award to recognize a contractor who has significantly contributed to the Tilt-Up industry. Parker is credited with introducing Tilt-Up to an area of the world where many thought it was impossible to use the medium.

The turn of the century saw the succession of the Group to the third generation. Continuing in the tradition of their father and grandfather, brothers Thane and Scott Stevens, who have been with the companies since the 1980’s, look forward to continuing the success of the Group well into the 21st century.

1997

In addition to the construction company, B.D. Stevens Ltd., the Stevens Group presently owns and operates concrete plants, a rock quarry, a nursing homes, a commercial door and frame supplier and various commercial real estate properties. As well, a sister company Citadel Contractors (incorporated in 1997), operates as a Tilt-up specialist out of Apex, North Carolina, serving the entire Southeast United States.

“BD” as he was known, had such a penchant for both founding and constructing Baptist Churches in this area that it inspired the writing of a book entitled “The Man Who Built Churches:, which gives an anecdotal glimpse into many of these projects and the man behind them.

1984 - 1989

The turn of the century saw the succession of the Group to the third generation. Continuing in the tradition of their father and grandfather, Thane and Scott Stevens, who have been with the companies since the 1980’s, look forward to continuing the success of the Group well into the 21st century.

1972

Murray Parker joined L.B. Stevens Construction Ltd. after receiving his engineering degree. Murray worked tirelessly for the company on every project he was involved in. Upon learning of Tilt-up construction, he became a pioneer in bringing this form of construction to Atlantic Canada. Murray was passionate about tilt-up and helped to make B.D. Stevens Ltd. a leader in the industry. It was a great loss to the company in 2000 when Murray suddenly passed away, but his impact on B.D. Stevens Ltd. still resonates in all of our work.

1957

B.D. Stevens son, Laurie Burnett Stevens graduated from Acadia in 1955 and earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1956. He then joined the family business, B.D. Stevens Ltd., and started L.B. Stevens Construction Ltd., with a focus on land development, in 1959. Laurie successfully grew the businesses over the years to become the Stevens Group of Companies.

1953

B.D. Stevens determination, integrity and vision stood him well as his business flourished and became incorporated in 1953. With a solid background in house and apartment construction, the company continued to grow.
